"HER"tory of ETA BETA

In the Fall of 1969, after much controversy from the Texas A&M Univ. System, the first Greek-letter sorority was formed on the campus of Prairie View A&M Univ....... Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The charter line initiated on December 19, 1969, with special assistance from the late Dr. Anne Campbell and the Prairie View Alumnae Chapter. Eta Beta as the name given to this undergraduate chapter which was chartered between Eta Alpha at Mississippi Valley State College, a fellow SWAC (SouthWestern Athletic Conference) school, and Eta Gamma at Kansas State University. The newly established chapter consisted of twenty-five young ladies who represented academic excellence, social concern and cultural enrichment. The original ladies were:

During this time, Soror Lynette Taylor was the Excutive Director, Soror Frankie M. Freeman, Esq. was the National President of Delta Sigma Theta and Soror June Brewer was the Regional Director of the Southwest Region.

The officers of the chapter for the first year were:



During the charter line pledge period, the twent-five young ladies participated in two project on campus:(1) the Nursery School Project and (2)the Children's Room Library Project. With these projects, they cared for the nursery school children and they conducted story book hours at the library along with other educational. Several activities were held by the charter line during the semester following their initiation.

The first Founder's Day program as held jointly with the P.V. Alumanae Chapter Chapter on February 8, 1970. This was the observance of the 57th year of Delta Sigma Theta. The late Barbara Jordan, a former State Senator of Texas at the time, was the keynote speaker. This marked the first of a history of joint Founders Day programs between the Eta Beta and P.V. Alumnae chapters.
